Hospitality was not invented in the western United States, but important developments occurred that have influenced the design and operation of hospitality worldwide. This is the story of those developments as they are shown with the notable hotels and hoteliers.
Central Texas is possibly one of the richest areas in the United States in terms of enclaves of European rural settlement. There, during the nineteenth century, immigrants
came to homestead on the frontier and establish their communities. In these communities they built houses, businesses, churches and schools. Many of these common or vernacular buildings are still preserved in the rural environments of Central
